Webinar and Dialogue Series

Webinars: META:PHI hosts a virtual presentation on the third Wednesday of each month from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Eastern time. These sessions are relevant to all service providers, such as counsellors, prescribers, administrators, pharmacists, and community workers who work with people who use substances. All sessions are free.

Dialogue teleconference: Replacing the Provider and Counsellor/Social Worker calls, the Dialogue call is open to healthcare providers across all disciplines and will use the previous month’s webinar topic as a basis for follow-up questions, case review, and discussion. The Dialogue teleconference alternates between the first Tuesday at 8:00 AM and first Wednesday of each month at 12:00 PM. Contact laurie.smith@wchospital.ca to be added to the series.

NeuroNexus: Neurodivergence and Substance Use Health

Megan O’Brien BSW, RSW

Please register for this session here.

Megan O’Brien, with a decade of service in the addictions field, combines her expertise as a Registered Social Worker with her personal journey as an Autistic individual with ADHD. Currently, she is a Provincial Harm Reduction Consultant in NL, where she champions collaboration, intervention, and harm reduction in substance use health. Megan’s approach, deeply influenced by her own neurodivergence and family experiences with addiction, focuses on fostering understanding, empathy, and supportive environments for recovery. Her work aims to dismantle stigma and highlight the nuanced interplay between neurodivergence and substance use.

.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the complex relationship and diversity of experiences in the context of neurodivergent identities and substance use.
  • Identify the dual concepts of risk and resilience within the neurodivergent community, and their application for mitigating the risks of substance use.
  • Describe a tiered prevention approach to substance use that acknowledges the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals.
